Koh Phi Phi Don, the main inhabited island of the Phi Phi group in Krabi province, connects with Ao Nang, the main beach area on the Krabi mainland, by speedboat. Boats leave from Tonsai Pier, in the car-free village at the centre of the island, and from Laem Tong Beach on the north east coast. They arrive at Nopparat Thara Beach, about 4 km from the Ao Nang resorts. The crossing takes 45 minutes to 1 hour. This route suits travellers with light to medium luggage heading back to the mainland for a stay in Ao Nang, onward travel from Krabi Airport, or connections to other parts of southern Thailand.

Phi Phi to Ao Nang route overview
Frequency: speedboats run daily. Departure times depend on the season and the departure point, so check the timetable above. Fewer sailings may run in the green season, from around May to October.
Crossing time: 45 minutes to 1 hour. The time depends on your departure point, as Laem Tong is further from the mainland than Tonsai.
Departure points on Phi Phi:
Tonsai Pier: the island's main pier, in Tonsai Village. It is the busiest pier on Phi Phi, with many departures close together.
Laem Tong Beach: on the north east tip of Phi Phi Don. There is no pier: speedboats pick up passengers directly from the beach.
Vessel type: speedboat only. Speedboats are faster than the large ferries but carry fewer passengers and less luggage.
On board: seating is covered and life jackets are provided. There is no café or shop on board. Luggage is stored at the front or back of the boat. Facilities vary by operator and boat.
Arrival: speedboats arrive at Nopparat Thara, a small pier at the west end of Nopparat Thara Beach. The beach is part of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. There are no vehicle connections from the boat: passengers walk off with their luggage and continue by road.
Phi Phi to Ao Nang transfers
Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi
Tonsai Village has no cars. Most hotels in the village are within walking distance of the pier. Staff may help with luggage, but expect to carry some of it yourself.
From Long Beach or other beaches without a walking route, take a longtail boat to Tonsai.
The pier area has ATMs, public toilets and restaurants.
The pier is crowded at peak times, especially from November to April. Arrive early so you have time to find your boat.
Laem Tong Beach, Koh Phi Phi
Laem Tong has no road connection to Tonsai Village. If you stay here, a direct departure from Laem Tong saves you a transfer to Tonsai.
Boats pick up passengers directly from the beach, not from a pier.
There are no ATMs at Laem Tong Beach. Withdraw cash in Tonsai before you arrive.
Resorts along the beach can tell you where the speedboat pick-up point is.
Nopparat Thara, Ao Nang
Nopparat Thara pier is at the west end of Nopparat Thara Beach, about 4 km or less from most Ao Nang resorts.
To Ao Nang: taxis and shared songthaews (pick-up trucks) run along the beach road to Ao Nang.
To Krabi Airport and Krabi Town: by taxi or private transfer. Journey time: 40min to 1 hour.
Ferry: a ferry also links Tonsai Pier with Krabi, arriving at Klong Jilad Pier south of Krabi Town. It takes about 2 hours, but gives more space for luggage and a smoother crossing.
Railay: Railay Beach can be reached directly from Phi Phi by speedboat. Railay is only accessible by boat, so this avoids a transfer through Ao Nang.
