Departing from Laem Tong Beach: if you are staying at a resort on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don, add the extra time to your departure planning. The ferry from Laem Tong takes up to 3 hours 30 minutes to reach Klong Jilad Pier, while the speedboat takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. Both stop at or pass through Tonsai Pier on the way.

Ferry or speedboat:

• Ferry: more space for passengers and luggage, and a steadier ride. A good option if you are not in a rush or if you prefer not to deal with the bumpier speedboat ride, especially from May to October.

• Speedboat: about half the time of the ferry from Tonsai Pier. Useful if you have a tight connection at Krabi Airport or are travelling onwards the same day. The ride can be bumpy, particularly from May to October.

Arrival: Klong Jilad Pier is the main arrival point for boats from the islands into Krabi. From there, taxis, songthaews and private transfers connect to Krabi Airport, Krabi Town and Ao Nang.

Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi

• Tonsai Pier is in the centre of Tonsai Bay, the island's main pier and the departure point for the majority of boats to the mainland and other islands.

• From Tonsai Village: most hotels are within walking distance of the pier. Expect to carry your own luggage through narrow pedestrian lanes.

• From Long Beach or other beaches: hire a longtail boat to Tonsai Pier. Allow extra time, particularly for morning departures.

• Facilities: ATMs, public toilets and many restaurants near the pier.

• The pier can be very busy in the morning, when several boats leave for different destinations around the same time.

Laem Tong Beach, Koh Phi Phi

• Laem Tong Beach is on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don and has no pier. Passengers board by longtail boat or floating walkway, or directly from the beach.

• From Laem Tong resorts: resort staff can usually arrange the transfer to the boat. Confirm this with your hotel.

• By ferry: the ferry from Laem Tong calls at Tonsai Pier before continuing to Klong Jilad Pier. Total crossing time is about 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes.

• By speedboat: the speedboat takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to Klong Jilad Pier. The Laem Tong speedboat usually stops at Tonsai Pier on the way.

Klong Jilad Pier, Krabi

• Klong Jilad Pier is the main arrival point for boats from the islands into Krabi.

• To Krabi Airport: by taxi or private transfer. Journey time: 30- 45-minute. If you have a flight the same day, allow plenty of time, particularly if travelling from Laem Tong Beach or during the low season when weather delays are possible.

• To Krabi Town: 10- 15-minute taxi ride

• To Ao Nang: 30-60 minute taxi ride.
