Koh Phi Phi Don, the main inhabited island of the Phi Phi group, connects with Railay, a peninsula on the Krabi coast known for its limestone cliffs and rock climbing, by speedboat.
Boats leave from Tonsai Pier, in the car-free village at the centre of Phi Phi Don, and from Laem Tong Beach on the island's north east coast. They arrive at Railay East Floating Pier. The crossing takes about 1 hour from Tonsai Pier and about 45 minutes from Laem Tong Beach. Railay has no road connection to the rest of Krabi, so the direct speedboat is the simplest way to get there from Phi Phi, with no need to change to a longtail boat in Ao Nang.

Crossing time:
Speedboat, Laem Tong Beach to Railay East Floating Pier: about 45 minutes
Speedboat, Tonsai Pier to Railay East Floating Pier: about 1 hour
Leaving from Laem Tong or Tonsai: Laem Tong Beach is on the north east of Phi Phi Don, the side of the island facing the Krabi coast, and the crossing from there is shorter. There is no road between Laem Tong and Tonsai Village, so choose the departure point where you are staying.
Vessel type: speedboat. Speedboats carry a limited number of passengers and bags, and the ride can be bumpy in choppy water, especially from May to October.
Who can travel:
Pregnant passengers are not accepted on speedboat transfers for safety reasons.
The usual maximum age for speedboat passengers is 70. Older passengers who can climb in and out of the boat safely may be accepted.
On board: covered seating and life jackets. There is no food or drink service. Luggage is stored at the front or back of the boat. Facilities vary by boat.
Arrival: the speedboat arrives at Railay East Floating Pier, on the east side of the peninsula. Railay has no cars: you walk from the pier to your resort with your luggage.
Phi Phi to Railay transfers
Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi
Tonsai Pier is in the centre of Tonsai Bay on Phi Phi Don, and is the island's main departure point.
Getting there: there are no cars on Phi Phi Don. Walk to the pier from Tonsai Village hotels, or take a longtail boat from beaches without a walking route. Long Beach is about 20 minutes on foot.
Before you leave: ATMs, public toilets and restaurants are next to the pier. Take out cash here, as you will need it on Railay.
The pier is busy when several boats leave close together, especially from November to April. Arrive early to find your boat.
Laem Tong Beach, Koh Phi Phi
Laem Tong Beach is on the north east of Phi Phi Don and can only be reached by boat.
There is no pier: the speedboat picks up passengers directly from the beach.
Your resort can tell you where and when to wait for the boat.
There are no ATMs at Laem Tong. Make sure you have cash for Railay before you leave Tonsai Village or the mainland.
Railay East Floating Pier, Krabi
The pier is on Railay East, on the east side of the Railay peninsula. Railay is surrounded by limestone cliffs and jungle, and is not connected to the mainland by road or path.
To your resort: walk from the pier. There are no cars or taxis on Railay, so plan to carry your own luggage.
Facilities: the pier has no seating. There is an information centre with toilets at the entrance to the walking street nearby. There is no luggage storage.
To Ao Nang: longtail boats run between Railay and Ao Nang Beach from about 08:00 to 18:00. They usually leave when they have 8 to 10 passengers.
To Nopparat Thara or Ao Nam Mao: speedboats from Railay East Floating Pier reach Nopparat Thara Pier in about 20 minutes and Ao Nam Mao Pier in about 15 minutes.
