Railay, a peninsula on the Krabi coast that is cut off from the mainland by limestone cliffs and can only be reached by boat, connects with Koh Phi Phi Don, the main inhabited island of the Phi Phi group, by speedboat.
Boats leave from Railay East Floating Pier and arrive either at Tonsai Pier, in the car-free village at the centre of Phi Phi Don, or at Laem Tong Beach on the island's north east coast. Both crossings take about 1 hour. Because the speedboat leaves from Railay itself, travellers staying on the peninsula can go straight to Phi Phi without first taking a longtail boat to Ao Nang or travelling to a pier near Krabi Town.

Tonsai Pier or Laem Tong Beach: choose based on where you are staying on Phi Phi. Tonsai Pier is in Tonsai Village, within walking distance of most hotels, shops and restaurants. Laem Tong Beach is on the north east of the island, with a small group of resorts and no road connection to Tonsai. Arriving directly at Laem Tong saves you a separate boat transfer across the island.
Vessel type: speedboat only. There is no ferry from Railay. Speedboats carry a limited number of passengers and bags, and the ride can be bumpy in choppy water, especially from May to October.
On board: covered seating and life jackets. There is no food or drink service. Luggage is stored at the front or back of the boat. Facilities vary by boat.
Arrival: at Tonsai Pier, you step off onto the main pier of Phi Phi and pay a 20 baht island fee in cash. At Laem Tong Beach, there is no pier: the speedboat drops you directly on the beach.
Railay to Phi Phi Islands transfers
Railay East Floating Pier, Krabi
The pier is on Railay East, on the east side of the Railay peninsula. Railay has no road connection to the mainland: everything arrives and leaves by boat.
From Railay hotels: walk to the pier. Resorts on Railay West are a short walk from Railay East. Plan to carry your own luggage.
Facilities: the pier itself has no seating. There is an information centre with toilets at the entrance to the walking street nearby. There is no luggage storage and no lost property office.
Book ahead: in the high season, speedboats from Railay are often fully booked several days before departure.
Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi
Tonsai Pier is in the centre of Tonsai Bay, on Phi Phi Don. It is the island's main pier and the busiest one.
Island fee: a 20 baht fee is collected in cash on arrival, for pier maintenance and cleaning.
To your hotel: Tonsai Village has no cars. Most hotels are within walking distance, through narrow lanes. Expect to carry some of your luggage yourself.
Other beaches: Long Beach is about 20 minutes on foot. For beaches without a walking route, hire a longtail boat at the pier.
Facilities: ATMs, public toilets and restaurants near the pier.
Hotel and tour staff wait with signs at the pier, especially from November to April.
Laem Tong Beach, Koh Phi Phi
Laem Tong Beach is on the north east of Phi Phi Don and can only be reached by boat.
The speedboat drops passengers directly on the beach.
The beach has several resorts, restaurants and bars, and is quieter than Tonsai Village, with no clubs or loud parties.
There are no ATMs at Laem Tong. Bring enough cash from Railay or the mainland.
